The Irish, often in the form of missionaries were arriving in Mexico during the earliest of the colonial times. The Mexican Irish connection was strengthened around the time of the Irish Famine. Many Irish were coming to America. These mostly poor Irish Catholics were offered citizenship if they joined the US Army. Soon these Irish soldiers were sent to the Mexican American War. They were being abused by the officers who were mostly Protestant and the last straw was when some of the Irish soldiers were whipped for attending a Catholic service at a Mexican church. A whole brigade of Irish defected over to the Mexican side. They are honored in Mexico to this day.
